Cleaning & Prevention

When it comes to maintaining oral health and keeping your dental costs low- prevention is the key. Effective oral health prevention plans involve you and Dr. Latham coming up with a healthy, realistic set of goals and tasks to keep your smile healthy and brilliant.

Included in this prevention plan will be tips for at-home care. This will include, but is not limited to, twice-daily brushing, flossing and a healthy diet. In addition, regular cleanings and exams (we suggest once every 6 months) with our office are recommended to fight off gum disease, decay and other dental detriments from progressing..

Dr. Latham will help you keep minor issues from becoming major procedures, lessening the impact on your oral health and your wallet, with pro-active oral care.

YOUR CLEANING VISITS WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Digital X-rays
  • Oral Cancer Exam
  • Teeth Cleaning
  • Home Care

Digital X-Rays

At Fairway Dental, your Myrtle Beach dentists utilize digital x-rays, the most up-to-date dental imaging technology available. They operate in the same way that normal x-rays do, but cut down the amount of radiation exposure by 80-90%. They also can render faster than normal x-rays, meaning they can viewed, enlarged, and studied on the computer by Dr. Latham quicker than ever before. We can even email you a copy if you need one!

Generally, Dr. Latham only needs to take a full set of x-rays every three to five years, and bite-wing x-rays (top and bottom side teeth that bite together) during regularly scheduled check-ups. More x-rays may be required occasionally, depending on the individual need of the patient.

Oral Cancer Exam

Early detection and treatment of oral cancer significantly increases the chance for successful treatment. The American Cancer Society reports that more than 7,000 deaths result from oral cancer out of the 30,000 annually diagnosed cases. How many of these deaths could have been avoided with an oral cancer exam and early detection? Oral cancer often doesn’t manifest with the usual signs of cancer, so without a professional screening from Dr. Latham, it can go undetected until it’s in an advanced stage.

Teeth Cleaning

Twice-yearly dental cleanings performed by one of our hygienists are essential in fighting off gingivitis and periodontal (gum) disease. Without removing bacteria from the mouth, it will start to accumulate, resulting in inflammation. Left untreated, this inflammation can develop into gum disease. Gum disease can cause the gums surrounding the teeth to loosen and dengenerate, eventually leading to tooth loss.

Home Care

Attaining and keeping a beautiful smile begins at home. Daily brushing and flossing can play as much of a role in your oral health as your diet and lifestyle. Having a diet high in sugary food and drinks, along with smoking or alcohol use can increase your risk for dental related diseases or issues. Cut back on those vices, maintain your at-home regimen, and keep regular appointments with Dr. Latham to sustain a healthy smile.
