Root Canal Treatment can save damaged teeth

In order to save a tooth that has become severely decayed or infected, a root canal may be needed to be performed. The "canal" of the tooth is the natural cavity (not decay) in the center of the tooth, that has a pulpy, soft tissue and the nerve of the tooth.

The nerve of the tooth is not vital to the health and function of the tooth at a mature age. If it becomes inflamed, due to infection, it can cause serious discomfort. During the root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp will be removed, and the inside of the tooth will be cleaned and sealed. This will both eliminate the source of discomfort and also help ensure the tooth won't see further infection.

After a root canal,  Dr. Latham will likely need to place a crown  to protect the tooth and bring it back to full strength.
